The buzz around celebrity skin lightening will never go away. So often we see celebrities disappear for a little while and come back looking drastically lighter or we just see them gradually getting lighter right before our eyes. Sometimes we can blame lighting and make-up but other times we can’t help thinking they must have had some help in the way of skin lightening products.

Do you remember Kim from late 80s/early 90s sitcom A Different World? Well she is looking very different indeed! Check out these then and now photos of actress Charnele Brown.

So what do you think? Make up and lighting or skin lightening?

If you’re going to use skin lightening products to fade dark marks or lighten your skin tone, remember to use safe products. There are some products that contain ingredients that can harm your skin so be sure to avoid those and use safe skin lightening products with naturally derived ingredients such as the ones we promote on this site.

  1. YES I DO THINK SHE USED SKIN LIGHTENING. I WISH I KNEW WHAT SHE USED BECAUSE SHE STILL LOOKS GREAT. SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN PRETTY TO ME. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A SKIN LIGHTERNER SINCE I WAS BURNED BY HOT WATER FROM A CAR RADIATOR IN THE FACE AND CHEST AREAS. I REALLY WISH I KNEW WHAT SHE USED. SHE LOOKS TONED SHE LOOKS GREAT.

  2. I’m sad to see such a beautiful dark skin black woman lighten her skin. As a dark skin woman, growing up I always admired the beauty and flawlessness of her skin. I’m heart broken that for whatever reason that has changed. She’s still beautiful but I must admit that I loved the dark skin Charnele from A Different World better.

  3. She was always the one to look at.
Superb smile, sparkling eyes, fabulous complexion, stunning features and always so positive.
I was recently looking around Houston on google maps, when noticed a dollar store icon, so I copied the address to see what what was on offer, being from the uk I was astounded to find skin lightening products being sold so blatantly in store (the warning may aswell have read don’t be black).
I was amazed at the downright cheek and gall of the retailer, having the nerve to stock this product.
I ask all my friends of colour at one time or another, if you come back again and be any race which would you choose?
Every single one of them said they’d come back the race they were.
You skin is a defining part of your character, walk tall.
I hope what we’re looking at is photoshop, for if it’s not it’s a crying shame.

  4. Well,

I am dark skinned and I can tell you that my skin, because it produces more melanin has a lot of discoloration, melasma, what have you. OVer the past two years- I have spent hundreds of dollars on researching what to do about my marks and discoloration.

Yes, dark skin is beautiful but it is more sensitive and prove to hyperpigmtentation and I am ashamed to be the harbor of so much melanin. When I go dancing, I get turned down to dance althoughI am a great dancer because I can tell they dont’ want to be around such dark skin. Its the way it is around the world. Being black is beautiful if you are not too black.

  5. I sincerely hope the photograph above of “Charnele Brown” is just simply the ‘lighting’ for that particular photograph! Charnele Brown was one of the MOST *strikingly beautiful* sisters on the “Different World” sitcom back in the day, with a beautiful ‘God-given’ complexion to DIE for! She’s still beautiful, evidently in this photo. I simply would ‘not’comprehend, WHY she would desire to ‘lighten’ the God-given perfection, of the complexion, she was *BLESSED* with?! Makes NO sense to me?! IF she did, well then … so be it, it’s her choice, her business. I hope she has NOT. It’s just wonderful and rare these days to be able to appreciate, and celebrate the NATURAL beauty of our distinguished African-American actresses. BLACK is a BEAUTIFUL thing!

  6. she was a very pretty before , as for the after i just can’t comment on it . never could have empathy for someone that would do this. i wish i was her friend before ’cause i’d have told her NO STOP DON’T!!!! SEE THE BEAUTY OF COCOA HUES! MY FAMILY INSTILLED SUCH A LOVE FOR OUR COLOR, BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL WAS CHANTED AROUND THE HOUSE BEFORE KINDERGARTEN EVEN. I CANNOT UNDERSTAND ANYONE WANTING TO LOOK SO DIFFERENT FROM WHAT THEIR NATURAL BEAUTY OF PEOPLE OF THE SUN IS !

  7. I recall her saying she was shocked that she was chosen for the role and to be among so many “lighter” complexion actors.

In my perspective she apparently has a few insecurities. I liked her BECAUSE
she is curvy and had that deep and rich complexion. I guess it was a croos too heavy to bear. She remains a beautiful woman. I wish her well !

  8. Why do we automatically think that if someone wants to lighten their skin that it’s self hate or that they have a problem with being black? Why does it break your heart when you see or hear someone say that they want to lighten their skin? Why are we so quick to judge these people? When you relax your hair do we judge you? Why don’t you wear your hair in its natural form? Why do you wear a weave? Your hair isn’t that long or silky straight? You get a relaxer, or wear a weave, or lighten your skin, or tan your skin etc. Beacuse it makes you feel good about yourself. You like the way you look when you have a relaxer, your hair is straight, and silky and soft. You like the way your hair looks when it’s weaved. You feel like a Diva hair down your back, flowing free blowing in the wind. Just like I like to have a clear brighter complexion. So whether it’s a weave, a wig, a relaxer, lighter skin, tanned skin as long as your not hurting anyone who cares. I love myself and my blackness. Just wish my skin was even toned, and blemish free, just like you wish your natural hair blew in the wind. Check yourself before you start checking other people. People with lighter skin have no idea what people with darker skin have to deal with on a regular basis. So, I say all this to say Please stop judging!!!

  9. She obviously was not happy with herself. But what she doesn’t realize happiness comes from within. So changing the outside will never never do. Change must begin from the inside.

  10. Ms. Brown was an absolutely stunning CHOCOLATE sister! To me, she was the most beautiful young lady on the show. I truly hope this is just photoshopped, because I would really hate to see her with lighter skin. She was beautiful the way she was born!

  11. This is a bold faced lie. That picture was photo shopped. You can find an image almost just like this one, with her smiling, that shows her beautiful shade of brown. Stop making up stuff author and check your facts before writing. Try to make other people think no one wants to be there complexion. That may be true for some but not this chick!
